de la Vida/Tree of Life
The Tree of Life is more than a decorative object, it’s
symbolism and function reveal a blend of European and Indigenous
Mexican cultures. Throughout history trees have served as symbols
of fertility and rebirth. The candelabras in the shape of trees
did not appear in Mexico until after the Spanish Conquest. Traditionally
the decoration of the trees refer to the story of the Creation,
and were given to newlywed couples. At the base are Adam and
Eve; the tree, which is loaded with symbols of life, represents
fertility, abundance and good luck. Imaginative artists constantly
invent new subject matter. The trees now provide artists with
a format to create endless narrative pieces that portray personal,
religious and secular stories that have universal appeal.
